Insulated vs Uninsulated Garages

Mar 9, 2025

Whether you have an existing garage or are looking to build soon, you likely have considered insulation. Depending on a few factors, there definitely are pros and cons of investing in insulation. Let’s explore both.

Pros Of Insulated Garages

Comfortability

Whether you spend extended periods of time in your garage or just want the interior of your garage to maintain a set temperature, insulation will be a good investment. Insulation will help maintain a fixed temperature regardless of the exterior temperature.

Extend Lifespan of Your Equipment

In addition to comfortability, maintaining a set temperature in your garage will help extend the lifespan of your equipment. Varying temperatures will shorten the lifespan of your equipment as the motor can overheat with high temperatures and with extremely cold temperatures, equipment can lose their lubrication quickly.

Long Term Cost Savings

While insulation is somewhat of a big initial investment, it will save you money in the long run as your equipment will have a longer lifespan. In addition, most garages these days are equipped with thermostats – so if you have an uninsulated garage, your electrical bill will likely skyrocket if you have run your HVAC (depending on the outside temperatures).

Cons Of Uninsulated Garages

Short Term Cost

As mentioned with the long term cost savings, there would be a large initial investment. According to Angi, “The cost to insulate a garage is $4,700 on average, but ranges between $1,900 and $7,700, depending on the garage size and insulation type.” If you live in a stable climate, don’t have an HVAC system, or will not be spending time in the garage, the initial investment may not be worth it.

Poor Installation

While rare, customers have had insulation issues after installation. Poor installation can result in interior temperature swings and additional costs for a repair. If you’re planning on hiring a contractor for the installation of insulation, it’s essential to ensure they’re an expert.

Wasted Time

Similar to the initial investment, if you don’t actually NEED your garage’s temperature to be regulated, it would simply be a waste of time to do so. The whole process typically takes up to 8 hours or longer not including the drywall work after the fact.

The Verdict

The pros and cons should be considered depending on your personal situation. If the climate is somewhat stable throughout the year, you don’t have an HVAC unit in the garage, or won’t spend extended periods of time in your garage – the initial investment for insulation may not be worth it. If your situation is the opposite from any of these scenarios, insulation is most likely the right choice.
