Garage Door Won’t Open?

Mar 16, 2025

Is your garage currently stuck closed and you’re not sure what to do? The likely culprits include a locked door, a dead clicker, the door is off track, broken springs, or loss of power to the motor. Luckily, the most common issues can be resolved without the help of a professional. Let’s explore each scenario.

Locked Door

If your garage door is locked, it won’t open. This fix is fairly straightforward – just make sure the door is unlocked and try again. We get many calls about a stuck door that simply was locked, so we want to make sure this is the first thing you check before you pay for a service tech to come out.

Dead Clicker

Similar to having a locked door, a dead clicker could be the only problem. Simply replace the batteries in your clicker and try again. It really could be that simple. As a rule of thumb, we recommend replacing your batteries every 3 months to ensure it never dies unexpectedly.

Door Off Track

It should be fairly obvious whether your door is off track and you may be able to fix yourself. Just double check to make sure the track is not bent and all rollers are encased in the track. If the door is off track by a roller or two, carefully lift the door and move it into place. If your track is severely bent or broken at any point, you likely will need a replacement. Should the ladder be the case, give us a call today!

Broken Springs

Your door also could be stuck closed due to either one or both springs being broken. There may be a noise when you try opening and it may even open a little bit (likely uneven) if you have a broken spring or two. You should be able to notice if the springs are uncoiled or completely broken and if you do notice this is the case, give us a call today to come out for service!

Loss Of Power To Motor

If you have assessed each culprit above and still aren’t having luck, you may have an electrical issue where the motor is not receiving power. Before calling an electrician to diagnose this issue, try resetting the breaker for your garage. Unexpected power surge or an outage can trip the breaker occasionally. If that still doesn’t work, you’re going to want to get a licensed electrician out to diagnose the issue.
