Is building a garage in the plans for your next project? Whether you’re looking to take down your current garage and rebuild or you’re a new home/landowner and are starting from scratch we have a few things that you should consider and we’ll help address those for you.

There are many things to consider when planning your new garage build such as the size of the door including the space needed, style of door, springs, motor, and the remote. It can be a bit difficult to plan this whole project since there are many options within each of these considerations and varying costs associated with each. That’s why we’re here, we’ll help you explore all the options and give you some things to think about before diving into the project.

Size and Style of the Garage Door

When it comes to the sizing and style of the door, you want to consider what your goal is. Are you looking to store 1, 2, 3, or more cars? Is curb appeal a priority? What’s an estimated cost for each?

Lucky for you, we  have two detailed articles written to assist you in answering these questions and more!

New Garage Door Needed? A Buyer’s Guide To Choosing The Right Door!

This blog will help you understand what to think about and plan when it comes to getting a new garage door. From budgeting to steps it takes to getting a new garage door.

What’s the Average Garage Door Size?

This blog will help you understand the sizing of garage doors. It’s not normally something we know just off the top of our head, so we want to make it easy for you to understand what size will suit you best.

Garage Door Springs

When deciding on springs, it’s important to take into account how frequently you will be using your door since these springs help counterbalance the door. The “cheaper” the spring, the less likely it’ll last which could cause future headaches. Two options for springs would include standard springs and high cycle springs.

According to our friends at Garage Door Guide, “High cycle springs have an IPPT (Inch Pounds Per Turn) rating the same as standard springs, but with far more coils storing the same amount of tension. This allows them to last up to 5 times longer than standard spring”.

Garage Door Motors

While there are many brands of motors, all at different price points, we recommend going with a Chamberlain motor which includes their signature Liftmaster. We view this as the best motor for longevity and efficiency. Their website is very easy to navigate and clearly lists the pricing for each product, the description, and reviews.

Garage Door Remotes

Universal is always the way to go. On the bottom or back of your motor, it should list the product info and just make sure the remote you choose is compatible with the motor you choose.

Just like anything else, read the reviews of the remote to ensure the remote is reliable. Other than that, it should come with setup instructions to easily get it working.

If you are having us install your new motor and have the remote already, we can program it for you at the time of install as well!

In an immediate need of a new garage door? On the fence about upgrading your current garage door? Not sure where to get started? Just browsing options? If you are in any of these situations, this blog is perfect to you!

We’ll explain “the steps” to going about getting a new garage door installed to help you plan for getting a new garage door installed and make it as easy as possible.

Steps to Plan For a New Garage Door

It can be easy to overcomplicate the planning of getting a new garage door installed. It’s something that you don’t do very often and it might even be your first time going about it.

For us, there are three steps we have customers when planning for a new garage door to help simplify the process and make sure they are certain about their budget, the type of garage door, and when they need it done by.

Figuring out your Budget

Since investing into a new garage door isn’t the cheapest investment into your home you’ll make, it’s important to understand what you’re willing to spend. This includes labor, materials, and potentially more to get your garage door installed, not just the cost of the door.

To help with this we have a few suggestions:

  1. Check the cost of your current garage door. This isn’t always easy to find but in general you’ll be able to find a ballpark price for your current door. This can help you understand if you want to fully upgrade or just replace the one you currently have.
  2. Look at the different options and sizes of doors. There are many different types of garage doors from single car, roll up doors, two car-two door doors, and many, many more.
  3. Once you’ve researched the different styles, think about other materials. Things ranging from material of the garage door, colors, styles of paneling, windows, etc. to help you get closer to the accurate price of the garage door alone.

One you’ve done all this fun research, move onto the next step.

Pick Your Garage Door

This falls on the back of what the research you just did. You know the cost of your current garage door, you’ve found out the different types of doors there are, and you’ve found out the multitude of creative choices you have to style your garage door.

Now it’s time to pick your door out.

There are plenty of resources to order you garage door, one being Clopay, which we’ve installed many times. You can have this delivered to your home or pick up, if you have the means of transporting back home. After that move onto the last step but a very important one.

Planning When you can get your Door Installed

Since garage doors are home to one very important aspect of your life, your car(s), it’s important to find a date that works well for you.

You don’t want to just schedule this on any day when all of a sudden, you need to take your kids to practice or you have an important meeting you forgot about at noon.

Installing a new garage door will obviously make your garage a bit hard to get in and out of for some time, so make sure your car is already outside or you aren’t in need of it for a bit.

Here at Today Garage Door Services, we are very flexible! We will accommodate the date that works best for you to install your garage door and make sure that we get the work done as quickly as possible without compromising on quality. Submit a request through the link below and we can schedule a time to come out and install your new garage door!

There are many garage door sizes out there and finding the right one can be overwhelming. How many options are available for my space? Can I select the color, windows, material, etc.? How much does the cost vary if I were to customize?… the list goes on.

Choosing the right garage door size is important when it comes to your garage’s functionality and the convenience of it. Whether you’re just replacing an existing garage door or building a whole new garage, learning more about standard garage door sizes can help you make an informed decision and that’s why we put together this guide to help you understand the standard garage door sizes.

Different Types of Garage Doors and Their Sizes

Single-Car Garage Door

Single-car garage doors are usually 8 feet wide by 7 feet or 8 feet tall. This sizing fits most standard vehicles and will provide plenty of space for easy entry and exit. There are some single-car garages doors that come in 9 feet wide by 7 feet high to help with some larger vehicles.

Two-Car Garage Door

For your traditional two-car garage, there are a few different options for widths. For a two-car garage, the standard door size is usually 16 feet wide by 7 feet high. The most common coming between 16 feet or 18 feet wide by 7 feet or 8 feet tall. These sizings allow two vehicles to park, enter, and exit with space to opening car doors or move things around as needed.

Three-Car Garage Door

Three-car garages have a bit more flexibility by having one large door or a combination of smaller doors along the whole garage. A common size for a single three-car garage door is 24 feet wide by 7 feet high leaving space to comfortably fit your vehicles. Alternatively, you might see configurations with two doors, one 16 feet wide by 7 feet high and another 8 feet wide by 7 feet high, or three individual doors, each 8 feet wide by 7 feet high. These options allow for various combinations to fit your specific needs whether it’s a side of the garage for storage or simply fitting three different vehicles in your garage.

Custom Garage Doors

Now normally the garage doors we’ve already mentioned meet most homeowner’s needs, custom garage doors are available for those who have unique requirements or wishes. These custom doors can be tailored to fit unusual garage dimensions, oversized vehicles, or specific design preferences you have for your garage. When planning a custom garage door, make sure to consider the following:

  1. The dimensions of your vehicles.
  2. The architectural style of your home.
  3. Any special features you might want, such as windows or insulation.

RV/Oversized Garage Door

This is a bit more specific but for those who own recreational vehicles (RVs) or large trucks, the standard garage door might not be tall enough at only 8 feet or 9 feet. RV garage doors are typically 12 to 14 feet high and 10 to 12 feet wide which allow the larger height and width RVs park safely and conveniently.

Considerations When Choosing a Garage Door Size

Now when selecting your garage door sizing or repairing/replacing your current garage door, there are a few things you should consider when doing so.

Vehicle Size

The size of your vehicles is a primary factor in determining the garage door dimensions. Ensure that the door is wide and tall enough to accommodate your vehicles comfortably. It’s no fun to have a garage door that is hard to enter and exit.

Garage Layout

Consider the layout of your garage when selecting a door size. If you have storage or other features inside the garage, make sure the door size allows for easy access and movement. Tight spaces make moving items around tough and getting in and out of your car a hassle.

Future Needs

The classic but make sure you’re thinking about future purchases and needs. Whether that be a larger vehicle or the need for ample storage space, choosing a slightly larger garage door can help you save the hassle of replacing it later and just focus on garage door repairs if needed.

Aesthetic Appeal

Now your garage door might not be the first thing you think of when home aesthetic but it certainly has an impact. It’s normally front and center which makes it one of the first eye catching pieces of your home. Make sure to choose a size and design that helps complement your home and enhance curb appeal.

Cost

Probably your biggest question when it comes to selecting the right door. Cutting straight to the chase, our friends at Bob Vila estimate a typical garage door replacement to cost between $1,500 to $6,000, with a national average of $2,500. It does vary on MANY things including both the labor costs + all the customization you do.

What’s nice about us here at Today Garage Door Services, we offer competitive labor rates. Once you select your perfect door, give us a call and we can get you in right away!
